Kids Indoor Snow Games
Jan

Kids Indoor Snow Games

We would like to invite school aged children in Kindergarten - 5th grade to an evening of indoor “snow” games (including an indoor snowball fight!) at Refuge on Jan 23 from 6-8PM. It will be an opportunity for them to socialize and develop relationships outside of their normal classes on Sunday mornings.

In order for this to be a drop-off event, we will need a number of adults and teens to volunteer to help (~1 adults per 10 children). If you are interested in helping and/or having your child(ren) attend, sign up here. Once we know how many adults can help, we will confirm children in the order in which they have signed up.

Men's Weekend Workshop

Men, we have a real enemy who would love to convince us that we are the only ones who struggle, that other men have it together, that we should keep quiet and just try harder. These lies often leave men unknown, isolated and carrying a heavy load of shame.

What if we were able to walk in forgiveness? What if we genuinely believed that, in Jesus, our sins have been forgiven? Then…we could walk in the light! We could be honest! We could confess to one another and fight these lies together!

Come join us for a weekend diving into the topics that a lot of men struggle silently through. Let’s learn how to fight well together.

On Friday, Jan 30 from 6-9PM and Saturday, Jan 31 from 7:30-11:45AM, men ages 18 and older (16 with an accompanying adult) are invited to join us for a time of worship and teaching from local pastors on topics relevant to men, as well as group discussion and fellowship. There is no cost to attend. Snacks, beverages, and Saturday breakfast are provided.

Sign up here!

Hear from local pastors :

  • Doug Hon - Main Street Church St. Charles

  • Sean Boone - The Bridge North County

  • Trey Herweck - Refuge Church

Want to learn more? How about going to school on a Sunday! We will be offering a choice of different four week classes from 9-9:50AM on Feb 1, 8, 15, & 22. The classes will be instruction-centered (instead of discussion-centered) and childcare will be available. Sign up here!

This winter's classes are:

  • On Being Protestant (taught by Joel Waymack) Have you ever wondered why Roman Catholics go to confession? Or why Eastern Orthodox churches have walls covered in images of saints? In this class, we're going to look at the three major traditions within Christianity: Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. We'll dive into aspects of how they are the same, how they differ, and why Refuge is a Protestant church.

  • Christianity and Contemporary Culture (taught by Joel Keen) - Polarization. Protest. Pleas for peace. Profits. Pursuits. Plans. It's all so confusing. Add to it how to bring a Christian perspective and response to it, and it starts to feel hopeless. So how is a Christian supposed to respond to contemporary culture? Should we hide away? Become militant against it? Quietly go along to get along? Or is there another option? This class explores how Christianity truly changes our approach to contemporary issues, giving us a perspective that enables us to engage and bring transformations in small and big ways.

This fall's classes are:

  • Show Me Your Glory: A Study on the Character of God from Exodus 34:6-7 (taught by Laura Waymack) When Moses asks God to show him his glory, God responds by revealing his character: compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness. These verses go on to become the most quoted verses in the Bible, by the Bible. Prophets, psalmists, and leaders use these words again and again to describe the character of God and his consistency in dealing with people. This class will examine each of these words and reflect on both what they reveal about who God is and who we are called to be in response. We become like what we worship, so understanding the character of the God we serve will shape who we become.

  • Challenging Issues in the Old Testament Law: Marriage, Slavery, Warfare (taught by Michael Durso) - The Law of Moses, particularly Christians’ acceptance of it as Scripture, has been heavily criticized for its apparent belittling of women, promotion of slavery, and sanctioning of religious violence. Jews and Christians believe that it does neither of these things. But the reasoning for this is not always clear, and it can’t be as simple as just “Well that was the Old Testament and now we have Jesus.” That answer won’t suffice for the skeptic and does not suffice for the Christian who says, with the Psalmist, “The Law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul” (Ps. 19:7, ESV). This class will discuss the nature and function of the Law of Moses, how it functioned as “legal wisdom” within Israel's covenant with God and how Christians should relate to it. Then we will discuss three issues that seem to be the most difficult to understand, especially to understand as “perfect”: women and marriage, slavery, and warfare.

Annual BBQ

Join us after service at our very own building on Sept 28 for a BBQ to celebrate Refuge's 19th year! Refuge will provide meat, beverages, and dessert. Please bring a side or salad to share. This is a great opportunity to invite friends and to meet new people!

Weather permitting we will be hanging out outside in the parking lot, so bring your lawn chairs and lawn games.

Sip & Stitch

Have a craft that you can never find time to work on? Want to start working on a craft or learn from someone with more experience than you?

Come join us on the last Saturday of each month from 6-8PM. We will have the Conference Room open for anyone who wants to bring a craft project (knitting, crochet, embroidery, scrapbooking, etc.) to work on while chatting and sipping tea. All are welcome: men, women, and teens!
