Eric Vandyne - Arts and Culture

Eric VanDyne
Married to Lisa, with 2 kids: Elijah and Naomi.

Myers/Briggs: INTP I think, but I always feel like I'm rigging these types of tests because I know they are just trying to categorize me.
Favorite Color: It has changed throughout the years, and sometimes it depends on the object for which the color is being chosen, but in general: Orange.

I've been attending the Refuge since the summer of 2007, and I've been helping with music and arts since I walked in the door.

A questionnaire

Q:What are you afraid of?
A:Trying something and failing.
Q:What would be the best and worst parts of being a big rig truck driver?
A:Best: Packages of those mini chocolate and powdered-sugar doughnuts at every stop!  Worst: the inability to smash crazy SUV drivers off of the road.
Q:What scientific explanation can you give for cell phones causing cancer?
A:Cell phones do indeed emit electromagnetic radiation in the UHF band, and anytime you have radiated electromagnetic signals then you have the potential for some serious harm.  This radiation is most harmful to developing cells in the body.  In our current example, an adult using a cell phone for hours on end during the day, talking and texting while driving, eating, and going to the bathroom, is less susceptible to developing cancer because few of the critical cells in the body are still developing.  Children however have many types of cells that are still developing, including brain cells, which makes them much more susceptible to anomalous cellular development, known as cancer.  This is also a good reason not to give kids cel phones.
Q:If you were a hotdog, would you eat yourself?
A:Instead of a standard "all beef frank" or "chicken, beef, and pork" mix, I would be made entirely of ground up bacon and pepperoni, making me irresistible.
Q:What is your favorite book and why?
A:I have several.
In the fiction category one of my top picks is a medieval fantasy book called Talion: Revenant by Michael A. Stackpole, which is about an underdog character who seeks to bring justice to the world, but mixed with mercy and wisdom.  He also has the ability to rip peoples' souls from their bodies when necessary, which is cool.
In the Non-fiction category, one of my top picks of the past year or so is God Gave Wine by Kenneth Gentry, Jr.  It's a well-written, tactful treatise that digs into what scripture has to say about the use of alcohol.
Q:Who is your favorite artist?
A:I've come to like most of the sounds that producer Brendan Obrien is able to coax from various musicians, from the 90's through today. Explosions In The Sky is another one of my current favs.
Q:What is the nerdiest thing you do?
A: Perhaps we should list the non-nerdy things that I do...hmmm.
Q:What is your favorite Rock Band instrument?
A: Drums.  Guitarists are weaklings.
Q:On a scale of 1-10 how cool is David the webmaster and why?
A:9/10.  I've never seen David wear socks up past his ankle (even in winter) or any kind of shoe with laces in it.  In all kinds of ways he is the "king of the slip-on".
